Message To LLR Stakeholders About Regulatory Review Process
National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy Examination
The national certification examination for the Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is sponsored by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). The examination is administered by the Professional Examination Service (PES).
Candidates taking the OTR or COTA examination must have completed all requirements for the appropriate degree/certificate in occupational therapy and completed all requirements for the appropriate level of fieldwork before the administration of the examination.
In order to increase certification examination opportunities for candidates, and in order to facilitate their ability to meet state/territorial regulation requirements in a timely manner, NBCOT uses a computerized testing format. The certification examinations for the OTR and COTA are offered in a computerized format at Prometric computer centers in the United States, including Puerto Rico, and Canada.
Effective September 2001 there will be no paper and pencil examinations offered, unless for an approved special accommodation.
