To Occupational Therapy Practitioners:
The South Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy (SCBOT) has the responsibility of promoting public safety for those who receive OT services. Currently, there are no known assurances, which are available to guarantee continued competency. For this reason, the Board has mandatory continuing education requirements to promote professional advancement, which can meet individual practitioner needs and serve to facilitate public protection. The foundations for the SCBOT’s responsibilities are written in Chapter 94, Article 1 and Article 4 of the S.C. Code of Regulations.
The Board will ask for a statement of completion of the required 16 hours on the next licensure renewal application in 2011. The collection period for continuing education experiences will be between March 16, 2009 and March 15, 2011. There will be a random audit performed following the return of the 2011 renewal applications. Certain licensees will be requested to submit proof of continuing education for this audit. The proof should be submitted on the Board approved form. Additional documentation will also be required as specified on the Frequently Asked Questions.
Each practitioner may use the Continuing Education Form for record keeping purposes, and the Frequently Asked Questions to assist with additional clarification that you may need on the issues of continuing education. The Board offers this as a means to ease the transition and educate occupational therapy practitioners on these new continuing education expectations. It is recommended that you make copies and fill it out over the two-year renewal cycle.
The Board will not pre-approve continuing education experiences. Please use the guidelines and materials (Continuing Education, Chapter 94. Occupational Therapists) available to assist you in determining what experiences meet the acceptable criteria and limits.
