Continuing Education
Guidelines for Submitting Requests for Approval of Continuing Education
1. All courses, seminars, workshops, classes, etc., including all materials and handouts for Continuing Education credit must be approved and certified by the South Carolina Board of Funeral Service. The instructor(s) must also be approved and certified by the State Board.
Requests for approval of Continuing Education courses must be submitted a minimum of thirty (30) days prior to the presentation. All in-state courses are subject to being monitored by designated members of the State Board. Courses will be made available in locations easily accessible to participants and opened to all licensed persons. Records showing completion of credit hours must be signed by the designated authorized person and submitted to the Board Office.
2. Suggested Course Content
The purpose of continuing education is to assist the licensee in sustaining
competency and in remaining current. Therefore, to assure that the most modern,
scientific and up-to-date principles, practices and programs are adhered to and
provided in South Carolina, the Board recommends the following:
Funeral Directors: Accounting, Mortuary Administration, Psychology, Sociology, State and Federal Law and related fields.
Embalmers: Anatomy, Chemistry, Embalming, Microbiology, Pathology, Restorative Art, Eye Enucleation, Blood Borne Pathogens, Formaldehyde Control, Hazard Communication and State and Federal Law and related fields.
Funeral Directors/Embalmers: OSHA classes pertaining to Funeral Service, DHEC classes pertaining to Funeral Service/Death Certificates, etc., Probate Law, Other State and Federal Laws and related fields.
3. Instructors
Instructors must show evidence of:
a) Academic Qualification and Business/Professional Experience - Graduation from an accredited Mortuary School, or Baccalaureate Degree, or Teacher's Certificate, or equivalent substantiation of competency; experience in Funeral Service, Industry or related fields; and
b) Meet the requirement of Funeral Service Law, Section 40-19-100 (1)(A)(ii), "has not been convicted of a violent crime of moral turpitude."
4. Approval Form
Complete the "Request for Approval of Continuing Education" form in its entirety
and submit a copy of the course material to:
