Qualifications for Licensure
General and Mechanical Contractors
To qualify for licensure, an entity shall file a written application on forms provided by the Board and include the following:
1) Fee
2) Financial Statement on the Entity
3) Exam Qualifying Party Name
4) Technical and Business Management/Law Score Sheets, or, a Letter of Good
Standing from a qualifying state (see Waiver Agreement).
5) Experience Affidavit
6) South Carolina Code of Laws Take Home Exam Completed by the Exam Qualifying
party
All applicants must designate an exam qualifying party in a full-time position in a responsible management position to pass the appropriate exams and be able to document 2 years of experience within the last 5 years for the classification(s) of work in which you are applying.
A change of an entity’s name, organizational status, or federal employer identification number must be reported to the department within fifteen days and requires the new entity to submit an initial application and meet all requirements for an initial license. Failure to notify the department within 15 days results in license cancellation fifteen days from the date of change.
Burglar and Fire Alarm Business Contractors
To qualify for licensure, an entity shall file a written application on forms provided by the Board and include the following:
1) Fee
2) Certificate of Liability Insurance
3) Exam Qualifying Party information
4) Technical and Code of Laws Score Sheets
All applicants must designate a Primary Qualifying Party who is an owner, partner, or officer of A burglar alarm system business, or a full-time employee holding a managerial or supervisory position. A certificate of comprehensive general liability insurance providing for the following minimum coverage: one hundred thousand dollars due to bodily injury, death, or destruction of property as the result of the negligent act or acts of the principal insured. The policy must be purchased from an insurer or licensed agent authorized to do business in this state.

A branch office is required to submit an application, certificate of liability insurance and fee for each additional location.
Fire Sprinkler Contractor
To qualify for licensure, an entity shall file a written application on forms provided by the Board and include the following:
1) Fee
2) Certificate of Liability Insurance
3) Proof of NICET level III examination
All applicants must contact the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) @ (888) 476-4238 for examination information. You may also visit their Web site www.nicet.org.
The liability insurance policy must provide coverage in an amount not less than one hundred thousand dollars and cover any loss to property or personal injury caused by the fire protection sprinkler contractor. The policy must be purchased from an insurer authorized to do business in South Carolina.
