Q. Does your Board require Continuing Education for renewal?

Yes. You need 12 hours of CE annually (of which 8 hours must be in health, safety, and welfare) for renewal.

Q. Do I have to mail any CE documentation to the Board?

No, do not send any documentation of CE to the Board office. If you are audited, you will then need to send proof of twelve hours of continuing education. A minimum of 8 CE hours must include the study of relevant technical and professional architectural subjects related to safeguarding life, health, property, and promoting the public welfare. A maximum of 4 CE hours may consist of elective topics related to any other area in the practice of architecture. This reporting period is from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007. However, continuing education activities completed after July 1, 2005, which were not used for last year’s renewal, will also be accepted.

Q. What is the licensure period for individual renewals?

Licensure period is July 1 – June 30. Certificates of Registration issued to individuals expire annually on June 30 and become invalid after that date unless renewed.

Q. Does the Board have an inactive status for Certificate of Registrations?

The Board does not have a formal “inactive” classification. If you do not wish to renew your license, we ask that you notify us in writing and/or by e-mail to archelp@llr.sc.gov

Q. How do I reactivate a Certificate of Registration that has expired?

Your Certificate may be renewed at any time during the remainder of the following fiscal year on payment of the renewal fee plus late penalty of $50.00 during the first thirty days and an additional $100.00 thereafter during the first year. If you do not renew your registration by June 30 of the current year, it cannot be reissued except by a new application accompanied by our application fee ($190.00) and approval by the Board.

Q. Does your Board have an Emeritus Architect Status for renewals?

Yes. To become an Emeritus Architect, you have to be fully retired from active practice, 65 or older and have been licensed in any state for 10 consecutive years. If you want to become an Emeritus Architect, simply complete the portion of the renewal form and switch from active to Emeritus. As an emeritus architect, you may not practice AT ALL.
