In the event of a hurricane, the S.C. Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners offers the following tips for your pets and large animals:

If you go to a pet-approved shelter, remember to:

  • Prepare an emergency kit to include food, water and medications. If necessary, talk with your pet's veterinarian about sedatives.

  • Carry a two-week supply of regular medications.

  • Use a pet carrier.

  • Pack plenty of water, bandages and creams to treat cuts and burns.

  • Pack extra collars, leashes, blankets, chew toys and treats.

  • Bring plenty of plastic grocery bags to clean up after your pet.

  • Leave contact information in your home.

  • Secure pets in an upper-floor room with no windows.

  • Provide extra dry food and water.

  • Take a photograph of your pet with you.

After a storm:

  • Be aware of a heightened problem with mosquitoes, heartworms, West Nile virus and intestinal parasites.

  • For large animals before a storm: Secure photos of horses.

  • Use halters with nametags.

  • Spray paint your telephone number on the horse in a bright reflective color.

  • Gather extra halters, leads and sedatives.

For evacuation locations for horses, contact the Augusta Hippodrome in Augusta, Ga. or the Westfall Arena in Camden.
