Elevator and Amusement Ride Hurricane Protection

The Office of Elevators and Amusement Rides issues the following safety notice to owners and operators of elevators.

During extreme weather conditions, high winds and water may cause damage to property. The agency recommends:

Elevators:

• Park all elevators near the center of the elevator shaft or at least the second floor above ground.

• Secure windows, doors, and ventilation in elevator shaft and machine rooms.

• Remove power to the elevator at the mainline disconnect in the elevator machine room.

• Protect entrances exposed to weather.

• It is unsafe to operate elevators during a hurricane.

Additionally, the Office of Elevators and Amusement Rides at the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation encourages the owner to contact the elevator service company for specific guidelines.

Amusement Rides / Devices:

• Secure amusement rides / devices to minimize storm damage.

• It is unsafe to operate amusement rides / devices during a hurricane.
