Kristina Baker

Kristina Baker, a native of Columbia, is the Chief of Labor for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.  As Chief of Labor, Kristina provides oversight, litigation and legal advice to the Division of Labor including: OSHA, Wages/Child Labor, Immigration, and Elevators/Amusement Rides. 

Prior to joining the Agency, Kristina was in private practice where she served families in the area of family, probate, and civil law.  She is a former Guardian ad Litem and former Certified Family Court Mediator.  She is a volunteer and previous member of the Board of Directors for the Midlands Mediation Center.  She also has worked to help small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Kristina is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she received a bachelor of arts degree in Communication Studies with a minor in English.  While at UNC-Charlotte, she was a C.C. Cameron Scholar, President of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and Who’s Who Among American Students in Colleges and Universities. 

In 2003, Kristina was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina where she was a Moida P. Hodges Scholar, Constitutional Law tutor, and Academic Assistance Program Coordinator.  She was also a student member of the John Belton O’Neal Inn of Court, member of Women in Law and officer for the school’s chapter of the Black Law Students Association.

After law school, Kristina became an associate with Ellis Lawhorne, now Adams and Reese, in Columbia.  During her seven years with Ellis Lawhorne, she worked with the Litigation Practice Group representing companies in a variety of areas including civil litigation, premises liability, product liability and coverage issues in local state and federal courts.  She was also involved in third-party OSHA cases and inspections.

Kristina’s speaking experience includes: workshops and seminars to healthcare professionals, human resource managers, insurance personnel, fellow attorneys, local churches and schools.

She is a member of the American Bar Association and South Carolina Bar Association.
