Governor Nikki R. Haley and LLR Director Catherine Templeton today presented the BE&K/Turner Joint Venturewith an award for working 4 million hours without a lost-time accident on the Boeing campus in Charleston.
Less than 1 percent of South Carolina employers reach 1 million safe work hours, so reaching 4 million in less than two years makes BE&K/Turner a workplace safety leader in this state, Templeton said.
"This is yet another example of the importance of a state run, locally invested enforcement of federal OSHA.” Templeton said. "This is the type of result we can continue to expect from the Governor's commitment and partnership with industry in South Carolina."
S.C. OSHA entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with BE&K / Turner in 2010, whereby resources of both the state OSHA program and private industry were used to identify and eliminate hazardous conditions at Boeing's construction site.
S.C. OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program has provided training to the construction employees onsite, and the program's safety consultants are onsite periodically to identify any potential hazards.
Jim McIntyre, Senior Safety Manager for BE&K/Turner, credits this success to the creation of a team-member driven safety culture.
"We take pride in working as our brother's keeper, and reaching this milestone is an indication of how much we care for each other,” he said. "While we are proud of reaching four million hours without a lost-time accident, we are even more excited about our continuing progress towards becoming an injury-free workplace.”
BE&K/Turner broke ground on the Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansion in November 2009, began steel erection in April 2010, set the first steel trusses in May 2010, and formally celebrated reaching the highest point of the final assembly facility in September 2010. The project reached substantial completion, with Boeing receiving a partial certificate of occupancy from the City of North Charleston, on May 12, 2011.
The BE&K Building Group, A KBR Company, and Turner Construction Company have been partnering on select major projects in the Carolinas for nearly 20 years. This is their 12th major project together.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjBkF-eW5NA
